What is Anti SS-A Antibody?
The Anti SS-A Antibody is a diagnostic test for Sjogren's syndrome. Sjogren's syndrome is an autoimmune disorder affecting the tear glands and the salivary glands with symptoms like dryness of eyes, mouth, skin, decreased sense of taste and smell, joint and muscle pain. SS-A Antibody is almost found in 60% to 70% of patients suffering from Sjogren's syndrome.
A positive anti-SS-A Antibody test result also indicates the presence of connective tissue disease lupus erythematosus and rheumatoid arthritis. In females, a positive result before pregnancy is indicative of an increased risk of congenital heart block in the neonate.
What is Anti SS-A Antibody used for?
- To detect systemic lupus erythematosus, systemic sclerosis, dermatomyositis, polymyositis and anti-synthetase syndrome.
