Understanding Toxoplasma gondii - IgG
What is Toxoplasma gondii - IgG?
It is a blood test used to detect the presence of IgG antibodies produced in the body in response to a disease called toxoplasmosis caused by Toxoplasma gondii infection. IgG antibodies appear after the the disappearance of IgM antibodies. They indicate an exposure to the infection in past.
Toxoplasmosis has flu like symptoms including fever, nausea, headache, muscle pain and sore throat. Eating raw or undercooked meat from an infected animal, handling an infected cat or its feces and contaminated soil can cause this infection. It may also be transmitted during pregnancy through placenta to the fetus.
Pregnant women, unborn babies and immunocompromised patients have a greater likelihood of getting infected.
