Understanding Sickling Test
What is Sickling Test?
Sickling Test is done to diagnose sickle cell disease (SCD) or sickle cell trait. SD is an inherited blood disorder in which the RBC's acquire sickle shape and become hard and sticky. They tend to die off early and result in constant shortage of RBC.
This test is recommended in case of symptoms such as anemia, yellow eyes, swollen eyes/ foot, delayed growth and vision problems.
What is Sickling Test used for?
- To determine the presence of sickle cell trait if symptoms of sickle cell anemia appear
- To screen newborns for sickle cell trait
