What is Immunoglobulin G?
Immunoglobulin G (IgG) test measures the amount of IgG antibodies in the body. They are the most abundant antibodies formed by the body constituting about 75-80% of total antibodies. IgG antibodies are crucial in fighting various bacterial and viral infections. They are the only type of antibodies that can cross the placenta to the fetus in a pregnant women. IgG antibodies provide long-term protection against microorganisms. This test is done to find the cause behind various allergies or certain autoimmune disorders.
What is Immunoglobulin G used for?
Immunoglobulin G is tested when symptoms of deficiency of immune system appear, especially in children. These include greater susceptibility to simple diseases like common cold, greater susceptibility to infections, weakened wound healing, etc.
