Hepatitis B (Core) IgM Antibody
Understanding Hepatitis B (Core) IgM Antibody
What is Hepatitis B (Core) IgM Antibody?
Hepatitis B (Core) IgM antibody test is performed to detect and diagnose hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection. This test looks for IgM antibodies in your blood and helps to determine if you have currently been infected with the hepatitis B virus. HBV has a central core which is surrounded by an envelope. Our immune system produces antibodies against the core during an active infection. This virus commonly infects the liver and can lead to liver damage, scarring, or cirrhosis.
Your doctor may recommend this test to know the type of the virus causing infection. Also if you have any symptoms of hepatitis like nausea, dark colored urine, fever, loss of appetite, etc or if you are suspected of being in contact with the HBV, then this test may be advised.
