Understanding CT Chest Plain

What is CT Chest Plain?

Computed tomography (CT) of chest is an imaging technique used to visualize the chest area. It helps detect any abnormality in the thorax, rib cage, lungs, heart, spinal cord, or any other surrounding tissues and muscles. This test is recommended to detect the cause of persistent fever, cough, or any abnormalities found in the plain x-ray.

It may also aid in the diagnosis of medical conditions such as bronchitis, pneumonia, tuberculosis, or tumors in the chest area.

CT exams are relatively safe as compared to X-ray as it uses a small amount of radiation. However, pregnant women should inform the physician about their condition as the radiations might affect the fetus.

What is CT Chest Plain used for?

  1. • To determine the cause of symptoms like coughing, shortness of breath, pain, etc. • To detect inflammations or infection in organs in the lower half of the chest, including the heart, lungs, liver, and stomach • To detect injury to the internal organs, bones of rib cage, or spine due to trauma • To make detailed assessment if some abnormalities appear in a standard X-ray of the chest • To detect the presence of any tumors (abnormal growth) • To detect any congenital abnormalities (birth defects) • To direct intervention procedures like fine needle biopsy
