Furamist Nasal Spray is a steroid. It relieves the symptoms of allergic rhinitis such as runny nose, sneezing and sinus discomfort. It works by blocking the production of certain chemical messengers that cause inflammation (swelling) and allergies, thus relieving the discomfort and irritation in your nose.

How to use Furamist Nasal Spray

Direct the spray towards the sides of your nostril, away from the cartilage dividing the two sides of your nose. As you spray, breath gently and keep the head upright. Repeat the same process for the other nostrils.

Hello Doctor, I am PATIENT aged 30 suffering from Allergic Rhinitis. Nose soaring is my biggest problem. Late night and early morning I faced heavily nose soaring. I have tried several medicines and antibiotic named lorfast, picnovit, montair lc, flomist spray, furamist spray but all in vain, like at the period of using medicine all goes right, after leaving the medicine problem continues. One more thing I want to tell you that I have mild deviation in my nose after consulted to many ENT specialist they said surgery is not necessary but I am facing problem again and again. Plz. help

As per your symptoms you have allergic rhinitis. Allergy can not be removed but can be can be controlled with medicine you have mentioned. You can go for allergy skin prick test and immunotherapy . But treatment duration is 3-5 years. Now this is the current recommendations for treatment

Furamist Nasal Spray is a corticosteroid, which works by decreasing the inflammation caused by allergies. It reduces inflammation by blocking the release of certain natural substances that cause allergic symptoms such as swelling, redness and pain.

Q. My friend developed a severe allergic reaction when she started Furamist Nasal Spray. Could it be due to Furamist Nasal Spray even though it is used for allergy purpose?

In very rare cases, Furamist Nasal Spray can cause serious allergic reactions such as rash, hives, breathing difficulty, swelling of the face, throat, and tongue. It may also cause low blood pressure which may further cause lightheadedness and the patient may even faint. You should immediately contact your doctor if you experience any of these symptoms as it could be life threatening.

Q. My brother developed chickenpox while using Furamist Nasal Spray. Can Furamist Nasal Spray be responsible for chickenpox? What should be done?

Furamist Nasal Spray being a corticosteroid weakens the immune system of the body. It could have because of this that your brother developed chickenpox. You should immediately stop the medication and contact the doctor. The doctor may consider treating it with antiviral agents.

Q. For how long should I take Furamist Nasal Spray?

It is recommended that you take the nasal spray as long as you are exposed to the allergen. Consult your doctor if you have any concerns.

Q. Does long-term use of Furamist Nasal Spray have any side effects?

Usual doses of Furamist Nasal Spray can be tolerated by most people for long periods of time. But, few people may develop nose bleed, hole in nasal cartilage, and visual disturbances due to cataract or glaucoma if they take Furamist Nasal Spray for a long time. Moreover, high doses also tend to increase the risk of weakening of bones (osteoporosis) and diabetes.

Q. What is thrush? Can Furamist Nasal Spray cause thrush?

Thrush is a fungal infection of the nose and throat caused by candida. Furamist Nasal Spray can cause thrush as a common side effect. To avoid getting fungal infections, you should thoroughly rinse your mouth after using a nasal spray. If you experience any redness or white colored patches in your nose or mouth, inform your doctor.

Q. Can I take Furamist Nasal Spray for runny nose and sneezing due to common cold?

No, Furamist Nasal Spray is only meant for allergic rhinitis and should not be taken for common cold. Symptoms of common cold can be due to viral infection and this medicine does not cure such infections. Therefore, you may not benefit from Furamist Nasal Spray.
