I WAS HAVING SYMPTOMS OF ANXIETY AND DEPRESSION FROM THE LAST 6-7 YEARS AND WAS NOT ABLE TO COPE UP WITH DAILY LIFE SITUATIONS LIKE INTERACTING WITH THE PEOPLE AROUND ME ETC. I THEN CONSULTED A PSYCHIATRIST WHO GAVE ME A TABLET CALLED D-VENTIN WHICH IS COMPOSED OF desvenlafaxine SALT AND IS BASICALLY A SNRI. THE DOCTOR INCREASED THE DOSAGE FROM 50 MG TO 200 MG IN ABOUT 7-8 MONTHS. I HAVE FELT QUITE BETTER WITH THIS MEDICINE AND HAS ALMOST FORGOT MY ANXIETY AND DEPRESSION. BUT I HAVE DEVELOPED AN ADDICTION OF THIS DRUG AND CANNOT DO WITHOUT THIS. KINDLY HELP ME IN GETTING RID OF THIS DRUG.
Dr. Jyoti Kapoor Madan
Psychiatry
Based in your clinical history, your doctor plans the type of medicine and it's dose and duration. For first episode of anxiety/ depression/ panic, the usual maintenance phase is 6 months of asymptomatic period, after which medicines can be gradually tapered. But treatment may need to continue longer depending on severity and frequency of episodes. To take any decision to change medication or stop them, several factors have to be taken in account for which regular follow up with your psychiatrist is important. For second opinion, seek a proper consultation with another psychiatrist and take along your previous prescriptions. Antidepressants are not addictive, the reason the symptoms come back is because there is an endogenous disturbance of neurochemicals and like any other chronic illness, if brain is not able to maintain the chemical balance, symptoms return when medication is stopped.
