Your child’s medicine at a glance

Betadix Syrup is a combination of two antibiotics: Betadix Syrup1 and Betadix Syrup2.

Uses of Betadix Syrup in children

Benefits of Betadix Syrup for your child

In Treatment of Bacterial infections

Betadix Syrup is given to children for the treatment of bacterial infections. These infections may include genital tract infections, urinary tract infections, and gastrointestinal infections, including diarrhea, dysentery, peritonitis, and appendicitis.

This medicine helps clear up the infection by stopping the bacteria from multiplying and growing. In most cases, the infection starts showing improvement within 3 to 5 days of regular dosing. However, you must still finish the full course of the medicine. Stopping it abruptly may worsen your child’s condition or cause infection recurrence.

In Treatment of Parasitic infections

Betadix Syrup is also used to treat parasitic infections such as amoebic dysentery, amoebic liver abscess, trichomoniasis, and giardiasis. It works by stopping the growth of parasites causing the infection. As a result of this, your child’s infection is treated.

Side effects of Betadix Syrup in children

Betadix Syrup does not pose serious side effects and is well-tolerated by children. In case the side effects do occur, they’re likely to subside once the body adapts to the medicine. How Betadix Syrup works

Betadix Syrup is a combination of two antibiotics: Nalidixic Acid and Metronidazole. Nalidixic Acid works by preventing the bacterial cells from dividing and repairing, thereby killing the bacteria. Metronidazole kills parasites and anaerobic bacteria that cause infections by damaging their DNA. Together, they treat your infection effectively.

Quick tips

  • If your child develops diarrhea as a side effect, encourage them to drink plenty of water.
  • Betadix Syrup may cause an altered taste. Eating citrus fruit or sipping plenty of water or fruit juice may help.
  • Do not give any calcium, magnesium, iron, vitamin, or antacid to your child within 2 hours of taking Betadix Syrup as these can affect the absorption of the medicine.
  • Your child must complete the entire course of Betadix Syrup. Stopping too soon may cause the bacteria to multiply again, become resistant, or cause another infection.
  • Discontinue Betadix Syrup and inform the doctor immediately if your child develops a rash, itchy skin, swelling of face and mouth, or has difficulty in breathing.
  • Never save the medicine for future illnesses since its effectiveness in future infections cannot be guaranteed.

FAQs

Q. My child is having a genetic deficiency of the G6PD enzyme. Is it safe to give Betadix Syrup?

It is advised that you get your child’s G6PD deficiency evaluated before starting the course of treatment. Avoid giving Betadix Syrup as deficiency of G6PD enzymes can lead to breaking of blood cells resulting in severe anemia.

Q. What if I give excess Betadix Syrup by mistake?

An extra dose of Betadix Syrup is unlikely to cause any harm. But, you must still be vigilant because overdose increases the risk of unwanted side effects such as seizures, tremors, severe headache, sudden weakness, blood cell abnormalities, and rapid and irregular heartbeat. Rush to your child’s doctor on an immediate basis if you notice any of these symptoms. If you think you have given too much Betadix Syrup to your child, immediately speak to a doctor.

Q. What should I do if my child shows no improvement even after taking Betadix Syrup for the prescribed duration?

Speak to your child’s doctor if your child does not show any improvement even after completing the dose. It could mean that the medicine is not able to act against the infection-causing microorganism. Your child’s doctor may change Betadix Syrup and prescribe some other antibiotic that is known to have a stronger impact on the infection-causing microorganism.

Q. Can other medicines be given at the same time as Betadix Syrup?

Betadix Syrup can sometimes interact with other medicines or substances. Tell your doctor about any other medicines your child is taking before starting Betadix Syrup. Also, check with your child’s doctor before giving any medicine to your child.

Q. Can I get my child vaccinated while on treatment with Betadix Syrup?

Antibiotics usually do not interfere with the ingredients in vaccines or cause a bad reaction in a child who has just been vaccinated. However, children taking antibiotics should not get vaccinated until they recover from the illness. As soon as your child feels better, the vaccine can be given.

Q. What should I tell the doctor before giving Betadix Syrup to my child?

Inform the doctor if your child is suffering from heart disease, genetic disorders involving blood vessels, seizures, psychiatric disorders, diabetes, photoallergy (allergy from sunlight), neuromuscular disorders, or rheumatoid arthritis. This is because there is a possibility that Betadix Syrup may aggravate these conditions and result in complications.
