It is normal for men and non-pregnant women to have small traces of prolactin in their blood. Prolactin levels increase in women during pregnancy and just after child birth to enable them to produce breast milk. Abnormally increased prolactin levels, or hyperprolactinemia, may be caused by pituitary gland tumors. It may also be caused by hypothyroidism, kidney failure, liver failure, polycystic ovarian syndrome use of certain medications, etc.
